False Words Spoken
The text roughly translates: The devil resides in the hearts of those who use the word of God falsely. “False Words Spoken” was created for a portfolio project sponsored by the Honolulu Printmakers, the Honolulu Academy of Arts and the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art. Twenty Hawaii print artists visited the Doris Duke Estate and museum, Shangri La, to be inspired by it’s incredible collection and breathtaking environment which was created in the early 1930’s by one of the worlds wealthiest women.

“False Words Spoken” was inspired by the tradition of miniature painting in Islamic art though I recognize that I’ve broken with tradition in the manner and theme which I chose to pursue in this work.
As with all portfolio projects there were a few perameters set. One of the most challenging was a size limitation of 5” X 7” for the image, overall paper size 11” X 15”. For those who know my work this is incredibly small and a largest challenge for me. Could I make a print which had the same level of complexity as my normal work while working in such a small scale? |

| Oddly enough, very few of the images I photographed and drew on site ended up making it in the final print. The delicate surface decoration for the border surrounding the image was from a plaque of Arabic Tile I photographed at the British Museum many years ago. The pattern is oviously authentic and provided me with a way of cheating as far as the scale demanded by this project. |

Tommas, the subject in this work, fit perfectly into the theme as he is of Aramaic desent, though born and raised in Germany.
“False Words Spoken” is in the collections of the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art and the Honolulu Acadmey of Arts and was printed in an edition of 49 prints. |
